Signalling Taste, Signalling Wealth

One use of art is signalling wealth. Pharaohs, nobles and millionaires would patronize artists to create masterpieces that sent the message, look how great i am. This only works if making beautiful things as expensive. A rich people needed better ways to distinguish themselves. One attractive option is to switch from signaling wealth to signalling taste. To signal taste, you need art where the difference between good art and bad art is hard to discern. If anyone could discern it, then ability to discern wouldn't signal having more taste than average.
