Graham Greene was born into upper-middle-class privilege in 1904. His mother's lineage offered a better prediction of things to come. She was second cousin to the acclaimed author, Robert Louis Stevenson. The other boys at his school immediately mistrusted him and assumed that he must have been placed there as a spy by his father.
