The Legacy of Prohibition in America
In 1920, over 200 distilleries, 1,000 breweries and nearly 200,000 liquor stores closed overnight. Billions of dollars of tax revenue were lost over the next 13 years - effectively funneled into the pockets of men like Al Capone. It's estimated that repealing prohibition had a social benefit of 432 million dollars per year in the mid-30s. Today, there are more than 500 dry municipalities across the U.S., mostly in the deep south or Appalachians.
