The History of Ancient Greece

The Battle of Ephesus
Greece and Persia were at war in 497 BC. The Persians attacked Sardis after hearing of the Greeks' attack on Artefernes. When they found that the Greeks had recently departed, they followed their tracks back towards Ionia. They caught up with the Greeks just outside of Ephesus before being completely routed by them. Despite this defeat, the revolt spread to other parts of Greece including Cyprus where the kings also revolted against Persian rule. However, the Persians did not follow up their victory at Ephesus with a counter-offensive until next year.
