Lucy is our main character, but Charlotte dominates this opening scene with her manners and her propriety. She's kind of a stifled personality. She hasn't found herself yet. And there are a lot of people in her life who uphold kind of the existing status quo. But she also doesn't know what she would do instead. So that's like kind of she's on the precipice of breaking through.
