Māya is something like in physics we have learned that this world is basically nothing but empty space. Out of the same element, we create various representation. So at the sense level, the māya creates an illusion of the world of plurality. If I want it because I am right now identifying with the prakṛḉa, I see this world is world of plurality where I exist as an island and the world is around me surrounding me.
