The Role of Genetics in the Development of the Body
In fruit flies a few decades ago, it was discovered that certain mutations in these director genes control the development of the larger body structure. Some genes act as a switch to turn on a cascade of other genes and this is why many mutations involve the surprising appearance or disappearance of a full body part. In humans, you can find these surprisingly small mutations where, for example, a child is born with a tail.
