The Battle of Elbe
On October 19, 1812, the French army left Moscow. They were still over 100,000 men strong but these men were tired, homesick and hungry. As they started the long march back, their condition only worsened. The result was the complete and utter destruction of the French army. Tens of thousands of soldiers died from starvation, exhaustion or hypothermia. Some estimates have as few as 10,000 making it back alive. For a man who had prided himself as being a tactical genius, this was a colossal miscalculation.
