Is Facebook a Real Vendor of Academic Networking?

The author says he uses Facebook almost exclusively for professional things. "I have a personality in that comes out there, but I don't really post pictures of my child" He's not saying it obviates loneliness in the sense that I was talking about. It allows you to find ideas that you otherwise wouldn't have access to. But what's the difference between being lonely on the elevator and posting something on Facebook?
