The Politics of Tough Sentence
In 1996, the first MMP election, labour was in power and Labour pressured government to get tough on crime. In 2002 as well, which seems almost like an identical dynamic where you have pressure on tough on crime stuff. But actually, back then, the sensible sentencing trust was the second or third paragraph of every single crime injustice article saying, cracked down. And so we've seen the politicians revert to kind. The public does respond to it.
