Odenathus did take immediate action after Valerian was captured. He launched an assault on some of Shapur's troops returning to Persian territory following the Battle of Edessa. And he masterminded the murder of both Ballista and Qy'tus in Emessa. They were the ones who had been left behind after Makaryana had gone north to confront Galianus's forces.
