The Anarchy

George Martin has been very open about the historical inspirations for many of his works. This is a reference to the anarchy which was an English Civil War that lasted from 1138 to 1153. King Henry the first wanted his daughter Empress Matilda to take the throne and he made his lords swear not once but three times they would put his daughter on the throne. Another incidents later in the anarchy where one of the male heirs just mysteriously was the inspiration for Joffrey at the purple wedding.
