Love letters were a popular way to court especially among upper and middle class people. There were etiquette manuals and guides that gave you advice on writing love letters. This time period also produces Beethoven's most famous love letter which is really famous because people still don't know who it was written to. And in 1893 Oscar Wilde wrote, "It is quite a marvel that those rose leaf lips of yours should be made no less for the madness of kissing"
