The scale, the tempering scale that we are used to listening to now is the fully equally tempered scale. The reason that that arose was when they started mass production of pianos in the nineteenth century and other keyboard instruments. But if you go back to the eighteenth century, j s bach, or hayden, or mozart, or buxtehuta, or people like this, there were several different tempering systems that would allow you to modulate keys.
