The Connectionist Model of Parallel Distributed Processing
Why is this parallel distributed processing model thought of or called a connectionist model? Well, it's because the knowledge in the network is actually in the connections between the neurons and not sort of written down anywhere as a stream of like that. The unit for the word word is a unit for that word only in virtue of the fact that it connects to the letters W, O, R, and D. And so the entire basis for the word superiority effect that we've been talking about is the fact that there are units that have the right Letters.
