The Bolshevik State Was to Persist

Trotsky could never have carried out what Stalin did because it would have broken his vision of what communism was. So instead he just froze and waited to be removed from power. He didn't have the will to go through with what he knew had to happen. Of course Protestants socialism is the continuation of Protestantism. That's who the Bolsheviks were.
