In some countries, you could get fired for publishing a paper that is wrong. Or the other colleagues of yours, who don't know that you didn't contribute at all, might change their point of view about your work. You argue that fonders and institutes have a role in rooting out this practice. But there is also a role to play for individuals as well. This kind of involves gurgling your own name, which, in your case, very much isn't a vanity exercise.
