The 30-Year War in Europe
By the beginning of the 17th century, you had a situation where the pieces were in place for a transition to a new mode of production in Europe. But there was this feudal political order that had not and could not really be challenged from below. And so you have what is essentially a stalemate that is broken by a very sudden and dramatic drop in temperatures globally. It took 30 years destroyed for a generation, Germany, and also destroyed any possibility that capitalism, as we know it would emerge in Germany.
