The American ethos was based on Calvinism, which is this belief that if God loves you, he gives you all this stuff. And I do think that we just, it's a natural tendency gone completely berserk in our culture. So obsession with having more stuff than other people. Most of the stuff we have is about comparing ourselves with other people, not with our actual physical need.
