The Statue of Liberty started out as a gift from France to the people of America, largely as a bridge of friendship. The poem became attached and it became a symbol of hope for the immigrant. Josephine Baker was an African-American woman trying to make it in entertainment who found a home in France. She became the toast of Paris, the toast of France.
