"I've always been afraid of dying since when I was about five years old," she says. "The grueling aspect of what might happen before death is very much with me." The author and her husband got long-term care insurance to enable them to take care of each other in the event of their deaths. She writes that illness can kind of render someone less than human, evoke feelings of repulsion or anger.
