Valentinian and Valence

Flavius Valentinian was the son of an important general named Gracianus. Young Valentinian joined the army just after Constance took control of all the western provinces in 340. He served with distinction as a cavalry officer, almost certainly fought at the Battle of Strasbourg. The combination of Valentinian and valence offered a much stronger imperial hand than Jovian would have been able to provide.
