The Impossible Romance of Scholarship
Growing up I never met a scholar, a writer, any one of that kind. Few of my parents' friends even had books in their houses beyond the reader's digest. To me, the notion of scholarship, authorship and professional study was all impossibly romantic. My childhood fantasy did not involve teaching spotty undergraduates or justifying myself to people whose only skill in life appears to be counting money. If I hadn't given up smoking, I'd be smoking a pipe.
