Stoics are fatalists, right? Because the universe is going to do what it's going to do. But your own efforts, you can't control the results of what your efforts produce in the world. So whether or not you get to put any effort into anything is not in your control. As long as you understand the none of it is actually good or bad. Just what you prefer.
