Did Dante really go to paradise?

Introduction
It is surely worth asking whether Dante actually went to paradise, as he says he did in the divine comedy. He very self-consciously wrote for not just his times, but our times and knew that people were becoming uncoupled from spiritual reality. It's also I think worth pushing back against the strong tendency, particularly in the academic study of Dante, to use literary or critical techniques to explain it away.
