Diocletian and the Fall of the Senate

Diocletian needed to restore order after years of chaos in the third century. He thought he had hit upon a solution: emperors should henceforth look up to the heavens. This laid the foundation for 15 hundred years of divinely appointed kings ruling over europe. Neither man was an idealogue, they were pragmatists more than willing to follow whichever course would best achieve their ends.
