The Importance of Marking a Girl's First Period
In Tamil culture it's tradition that mums mustn't see the menstrual blood of their daughters. A close friend or family member like an auntie is quickly called to comfort and explain. Nirai grew up in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a remote chain of hundreds of beautiful tropical islands at the junction of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. For some people, marking a girl's first period is problematic with its connotations of burgeoning fertility. But for some people, there are consequences of not marking it, even ignoring it.
