The AIDS Crisis in the US

At the time of his speech, 36,058 Americans had been diagnosed with AIDS and 20,849 had died. Those numbers don't include the global figures, which by now are climbing into the hundreds of thousands. The timeline for a pharmaceutical drug to be approved by the FDA is on average 10 years. That's an incredibly long time for people who are dying within a year of diagnosis. It's not exaggerating to say that tens or hundreds of thousands of lives were lost due to the apathetic way in which the US government responded to the AIDS crisis in its early years.
