The Importance of Alternate Win Conditions in Magic

Milling in magic works as an alternate win condition almost as like an emergent property. You can actually kill the runner by doing enough damage to them because that's another resource you can manipulate and work with. But i don't know how you would really do that with a game like slay the spire. I kind of feel like you need human opponents for it to like really be meaningful.
