Hubble was designed to do a couple of important scientific problems, which it did beautifully. But probably the biggest hits are things that were not anticipated. And top of that list for me are the precise measurements of the expansion history of the universe using super nove as standard candles. The ability to very precise images without the blurring of the atmosphere was critical. John: "The discovery of the accelerating universe is in the top, certainly in the top ten"
