The Neurology of Dreaming

If dreams are so important to us, why don't we dream when we're awake? And it's a third thing, but I'll come back to that later. During rame sleep, the brain is activated in a very specific pattern. There are certain structures which are strikingly deactivated. The part of the brain that has most to do with our normal, rational, goal-oriented behavior and self-reflection is as it were offline during rame sleep. Rame sleep activates instinctual circuitry. If those circuits are damaged, you can't dream.
