How to Date Dinosaurs
The fossil record is incomplete by its very nature. We think that the current best estimate for their extinction was about 66 million years ago. If you were to hold a human femur in one hand and a dinosaur bone that's the same size in the other hand, the dinosaur bone is noticeably heavier. So we're able to date volcanic ash using radiometric dating methods. It's those ashes, those ash layers, at least where I work in Alberta that we date.
