What Are These Genes Doing?
Evan Eichler: There's something intrinsically slow about neural differentiation and particular synaptic differentiation in human neurons. So the question is, what are those genes doing? He says SRGAP2 turned out to be a gene that regulates synapse maturation. And so when we express this human-specific gene in mass neurons as a quick and dirty way to humanize those mass neurons, what happens looks like a very, very important thing.
