The Importance of Memory in Learning

Psychologists use the term familiarity very much the way it's used in everyday conversation. When we say somebody looks familiar who we run into on the street, we mean, I know that I've encountered them before but I don't have any more information about them. The judgment is made very, very quickly by the brain and determining that you have even more information about the person might take longer. So notice that this feeling of familiarity comes very, very rapidly and then slowly you can coax more information out of memory.
