The Precautionary Principle

The precautionary principle first gets introduced formally in the early 19th century as a principle of forestry, right? In Germany, you know, we're talking about the industrial revolution beginning. And so the question is, how many trees are we going to sort of chop down to build factories, houses, whatever?" The answer was, well, only chop down as many trees as you can replace, right? So it's a kind of steady state principle of what nature is about,. And if you violate the steady state principle, then you're in some kind of bad situation. That's where the precautionary principle comes from.
