Copper and zinc have anti viral properties. A piece of out dated japanese communications equipment was being jettisoned so it would d orbit and burn up. The reason that the i s s cameras zoomed in on it was because they were keeping track of it to make sure that it went away from the space station as it was supposed to. Even though it was a physical object, it was just a piece of space junk.
