Mormonism, at the beginning, had not been much of a departure from mainstream Protestant Christianity. But in Nauvoo, Joseph Smith has privately started to teach some pretty radical ideas. The idea that men and women truly are the children of God with the ability to become like him is very controversial. Some people see in plural marriage a thin excuse for Joseph Smith to have extra marital affairs. While others view it as an attempt to live a religious commandment despite societal disapproval.
