Epicurus Holds Prudence Higher Than Philosophy

Epicurus holds prudence higher than philosophy and he's pragmatic enough to imply that this applies to both earthly and heavenly punishments. The prudent person is pious toward the gods as a means of covering all his bases so to speak and being able to live free of fear of divine punishment just as not committing injustices against your fellow man allows you to livefree of the fear of earthly punishment. In its own right Epicurus sort of commits a cardinal sin of Socrates right he basically tells us that it's the the mal effect on our own ability to live at ease that is caused by acting unjustly that we should avoid.
