The Progressivism of the 1960s and 70s

Gabriel Colco and William Appleman Williams are major American historians on the Marxist or quasi-monautistic or quasi-Marxist left. They differ a little bit from consensus historians like Hofstadter and Schlesinger who kind of emphasized that, you know, America has a kind of liberal tradition. Progressivism was an adaptation to circumstances. It wasn't a fundamental critique. The radical left historians who start to gain prominence in the 60s and in 1970s see progressivism as an attempt by the Forces of Capital.
