The Bread of Affliction
In Exodus 29, the Israelites are told to eat unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Paul picks up on this idea in 1 Corinthians 5 when he says cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump as you really are unleavened. And so I think by eating it, they are also identifying with the sacrifice in its death? There's a sense of holiness here through an act of eating but being delivered through food.
