John Hughes says he confused notes from Alexey Vitch novel with interviews of his Ukrainian grandparents. He was teaching the material relatively recently, and the interviews had been conducted some time ago. So it was already teetering on the brink of the implausible. And I think the intertextual excuses really pushed it over.
