The arrangers and composers of that day felt that they wanted to write down exactly how the artist should transmit this emotion. And so the use of dynamic marking, sing this really loud, sing thisreally softly, sing this as if you're crying, sing these notes exactly in this way because that will transmit the following emotion. It was super super micromanaged, the way that the BaroQ era was basically up to you.
