The question of whether medieval logic is formal and what it would even mean to be formal. John MacFarlane had already done work in this direction, but there were things that I thought could be done even better than he had done. And so because I was worried about this situation of people talking past each other, I once wrote a paper called The Different Ways in which logic is said to be formally.
