Putin's amendments came as part of a legislative drive to close loopholes that have made it relatively easy for Russians to dodge the draft. It further underlines the humiliation Russia has suffered in what was supposed to be a brief special military operation. On the other, it underscores the challenge Ukraine faces. The country always needed unflinching Western support which made it clear to the Russians there is no hope of them holding on. And advanced weaponry which can score decisive strategic victories and potentially encircle and or kill thousands of Russians in decisive military actions. While not actually fighting a war, the future of Ukrainian security depends upon the outcome of this struggle and Europe's.
