The Persian Empire was the greatest empire that not only the Greek world, but the world period, had ever seen. It controlled an empire that stretched about 3000 miles from what is nowadays Western Turkey all the way to what is nowadays the Indo-Pakistani border. For Philip and Alexander, it just looked like it was right for the taking. They believed that they could conquer this empire or at least part of it and bring it under their control.
