In high school, my mom got sick with esophageal cancer when I was 14. She went into remission, then cancer came back with a vengeance and she died of a heart attack at 17. So I became obsessed with trying to figure out what caused her cancer,. What made it worse, why various lifestyle factors may have been contributors. It's a very, very complicated disease. And so my pursuit of my degree was purely therapeutic. To be able to learn the foundations of cancer biology in order to feel okay about teaching others, and knowing that your mom's cancer wasn't her fault.
