As a moral constructivist, I think what we mean by our the way that we get to moral principles via meta ethical considerations is we start with some moral intuitions. And this is what we do as moral philosophers: We sit down and say, okay, I have these very rough incoherent, sometimes incompatible kind of messymoral intuitions. Let's work them up into a logical system that is internally consistent at the very least, okay? And then the hard part starts, that was the easy part. The hard part is you realize that your system that is nice and logical and pristine only captures some of your moral intuitions, but then other times conflicts with them.
Welcome to the September 2022 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patrons, whittle them down to a more manageable number — based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good — and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!
