Horse racing is an extremely old sport that came here from britain, and this is how they'v been doing it for hundreds of years. All thoroughbred horses are marked as being born on january first, even if they weren't. Southern hemisphere thoroughbreds share a birth date of august first which isn't even months later. The rational behind a kentucky derby contestant being precisely three years old would be like, the two year olds won't be good enough to race against four year olds.
