How to Encourage Students to Use Strategies That Are More Effective
In general, much of the advice they get in elementary and secondary schools encourages them to adopt strategies that may not be that effective. People still use high stakes exams and people don't do a lot of inter-lie practice or space practice. The incentive structure for students is perhaps to favor things that align well with short term recall without that longer term learning.
