There's really never been a good study of psychodynamic therapy for dysthymia. It would be interesting to study but it really hasn't been studied in good trials. The medication approach is probably most common in both primary care medical settings and psychiatric settings. But either class of medicine is likely to be pretty effective in persistent depressive disorder symptoms.
